Overview of the novel "Neruda's Mailman" by Mario Jiménez. A young hunter decides to leave his profession to become a mailman in Islanigra, where the only person who receives and sends messages is the poet Pablo Neruda. The young Jiménez admires Neruda and eagerly awaits the poet to write him a dedication on one of his books, or for something to happen between them, something more than just exchanging fleeting words. His wish is eventually fulfilled, and a very special relationship develops between them, but the tense circumstances Chile was living through at that time hasten their separation in a tragic way. Through a very authentic story, Antonio Scarmeta manages to depict an intense picture of the influential seventies in Chile, and at the same time, in a poetic style, recounts the life of Pablo Neruda. In 1994, this novel by Antonio Scarmeta was adapted into a film directed by Michel Radford, starring the main roles played by Philippe Noiret and Massimo Troisi, who died one day after filming ended. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1995.
